SOFTWARE: AFFERENT SYSTEMS INC.

Afferent Systems Inc., a subsidiary of MDL Information Systems Inc., has a variety of software for classical organic synthesis, combinatorial chemistry, analytical data handling, experimental procedure planning, and automatic programming for organic synthesizers, and a data search system.

For parallel and combinatorial chemistry Afferent offers its latest release of Afferent Structure™ 3.0.  Afferent Structure™ 3.0 is a combinatorial product structure generator that creates virtual compound libraries based on reaction type and/or functional group or bond formation (reaction-based). This software has no restrictions on number of synthetic steps, it is applicable to both solid- and solution-phase chemistry, it provides full control on regioisomer formation as well as regioselectivity, and it can use MS Access or ORACLE for data storage-retrieval. Afferent Structure™ can also copy-and-paste structures from ISIS/Draw™ or ChemDraw™, it can import structures in SD or .mol format, it can import reactions in RD and .rxn formats, and it can export data in SD format.

The new version 3 of Afferent Structure™ now offers the following new features:

  • Synthetic methods: This new feature offers an icon-based drag-and-drop  interface to assemble steps in reaction procedures. Once a synthetic protocol is put together the program can produce a text-based protocol using a similar format as found in the Journal  Organic Chemistry.
  • Search capabilities: Now Afferent can search its knowledge base queering synthetic protocols and analytical data. Queries can include parameters such as reaction temperature, product purity, reagent, etc. to provide information matching the user's criteria.

Afferent has also released its new Afferent TeamWorks 3.0, a management system for both classical organic synthesis. Afferent TeamWorks 3.0 offers both a server and a client architecture using an Oracle data repository to provide an interactive and  secure multi-user operation.

Afferent also offer the following compatible modules:

  • Afferent Analytical™ is a module to consolidate, visualize and display analytical data with compound structure and well-plate or vessel location.
  • Afferent Synthesis™.  Through a GUI (Graphical User Interface), this module allows the user to use descriptive icons to create reaction protocols (reactor type, reagent/solvent delivery, incubation period, washing steps, etc.) to program several commercially available synthesizers such as IRORI, Bohdan and Gilson modules. Afferent Synthesis™ can also calculates and keeps track of solvent/reagent availability.
