Tecan (Europe) has announced the availability of issue 4 of the Tecan Journal providing scientists involved with Drug Discovery, Genomics, Proteomics and Clinical Diagnostics a global insight into the latest laboratory automation application developments and product introductions.

An article from Transnetyx, a Memphis, Tennessee based company, describes a new automated microarray system using several solutions from Tecan that is accelerating its high throughput geneotyping service. The proprietary process automates the entire screening protocol for detecting transgenic, knock-out and knock-out alleles in laboratory mice.

A new automated system to test the function of thrombocytes, an important tool for the diagnosis of hemostatic disorders, is described in an article from Professor H Trobisch from the Facharzt fur Laboratoriums- und Transfusionsmedizin in Duisburg. The article describes how the automated system based on the Tecan Genesis Freedom has replaced a manual system for testing 120 samples per day, releasing staff to perform other tasks, improving data quality and giving physicians and clinics much faster access to their results.

A further report details the work of Swiss cosmetics company, Beierdorff AG who have been working on the automation of a test to identify substances with antimicrobial activity against the bacterial strain Corynebacterium xerosis ATCC 7711. The automated microbiology system based upon the Tecan Genesis robotic manipulator has doubled the throughput of the test while maintaining the system free of contamination.

Further articles in Tecan Journal 1/2004 introduce EVOware, next generation control software for the Freedom EVO automation platform and the Safire2, a fully modular monochromator-based microplate detection system that offers a range of high-speed fluorescence techniques.
